An old red Ford 1954 pickup sits with a barn or lake in the background, and the tailgate is down. In front is a barbecue pit or portable grill sitting on the ground. Across the BBQ pit is a bar with meat and a grill top with cuts laying on it cooking. A few feet from the grill are bales of hay with friends sitting on them gathered around. Some in shorts, some in pants, one man just sitting with his laptop bag, tie and name badge on the ground behind him.
Friends have gathered around. The shot, back and low, captures the scene, something out of “Anywhere America,” someplace we would all like to be. It could be a scene out of a Hallmark movie; we would love to borrow their red panel truck. Behind the bail of hay is a cowboys rope, a women’s purse, a couple of FedEx boxes, signaling to all, “Everyone is welcome and has gathered around.”
Sitting on the tailgate of the truck, a forty-something woman in jeans and Laccase Cowboy Boots looking down with a beer* in her hand. With a dark tan, khaki shirt with sleeves rolled up; she is leaning slightly forward, taking in the scene.
Sitting on the tailgate bits of hay telling us the story, she brought the bales of hay and the other ingredients. Next to the woman sitting on the tailgate is a wood crate on its side with dividers and two empty slots. In front of the crate, one jar of SweetKick BBQ and the another our eye catches it, next to the BBQ pit with an open lid.
This woman with a square jaw and distinctive face and shape sets the image, but her stare at the barbeque commands we look at the scene with her.
